Christian Households, Community Brew

Do we REALLY have a Christian household? What does it mean? Is mine one?

I'd like to say that we all do. But what does it mean to really have a Christian home?
Some say that the definition means that everyone inside the home knows, understands, and fulfills their God-given role.

Some of the verses that apply here are, don't worry, I won't write them out. You can check them out on your own time:
 Ephesians 5:22-26
 Ephesians 6:4
1 Timothy 5:8
Proverbs 31
Genesis 2:18-20
 Ephesians 6:1-3

Some say that a Christian home is defined by what the parents are doing and teaching.

And some say that a Christian home is simply, one where God is alive and present in the parents.
But what happens if your home happens to be childless for now, or maybe forever?
Does my home mean any less because I don't have children to teach and train in the way of the Bible? I don't believe so. Even if you are a spiritually mismatched couple, your home can still be a Christian household.

I believe that what really makes a "Good Christian home" is you... your outlook on life, your willingness to put God first in everything, your humbleness that you are nothing without him. Basically, it's your relationship with our Lord that makes your home a Christian one. A home is just a building, it has no feeling or emotions. It's simply property. It is the human life/lives that reside there that makes a home. This quote has always followed me, "People are more what they hide, than what they show." How you act when you are alone is a true representation of who you actually are, than who you pretend to be when in public, or in the blogosphere. Everyone can carry their bibles and sing along in worship, but do you crack open that bible on a random week night?  I think that, above all else, is the definition of a Christian home... how much of God's word do you seek at home, when no one is watching. No one is perfect, God knows that. But he wants us to be willing to try, strive to know him, strive to be like Jesus as much as humanly possible. In doing this, any home you live in will always be a Christian Home.

Is there anything you do to make your home feel more "Christian?"

  1. I love this post, Jessy! My husband and I have really been striving to create a more godly home by having our own separate quiet times, turning off the TV and reading our Bibles instead, and praying out loud together at least once a day. Sometimes we are really great at this, other days.....not so much. But I'm so glad that He looks at our heart's desire and not just our actions! :)

  2. Love your heart in this! You're spot on when you said that a home is just a building without the God-fearing, Christ-centered lives living in it. Before getting married, I knew that I wanted my home to be a place of peace and refuge for people to come and feel welcomed. Hopefully, we are doing that even with our 60 lb pup running around everywhere. But it starts in my heart and in the heart of my husband. Thanks for these words and the encouragement they bring! Blessings, friend!

  3. Very good post. It encouraged me to think on what I consider makes a home that truly serves the Lord. I completely agree with you that children are not required. ;) Any household, regardless of circumstance, can serve Christ.

My favorite verse to operate my home according to is Hebrew 13:2 -

"Be ready with a meal or a bed when it's needed. Some have extended hospitality to angels without ever knowing it."

I just love that. Thank you for the reminder to focus on building a household that serves the Lord!

  5. These are great thoughts! I totally agree that "It is the human life/lives that reside there that makes a home." And I also agree that being childless doesn't limit your ability to be any less of a Christian home. Great thoughts, thank you for linking up with us :)

  7. as a Christian, I carry the spirit of the living God inside me. That's home. There's capability inside me to create an atmosphere of love and welcome for anybody I encounter, whether it be my family, or a stranger on the streets.
