Leading a quiet life

1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 New International Version (NIV)

11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

What is a quiet life? Is it just the absence of noise and chaos? Or is it a round about way of saying you put your head down and lead a quiet (for this day in age) type of life? Because if you compare me to "Today's generation" of just wanting to take great selfies at the most popular parties and bars and restaurants in the latest fashions, then yes, I lead a quiet life. Some might say boring life. But is that the true definition of a quiet life? Or is that just a personal opinion?

These days, everyone is so obsessed with social media, and portraying an amazing life, that they forget how to live a quiet life, even a good life. They're posting beautiful things, places and gorgeous selfies, but they're eyes are empty.  I Thessalonians 4:11-12 tells us to concentrate on simply living our lives in a way that will gain the respect of others through our labors and in that labor we will not need to rely on others for our daily needs.  But, this will only gain respect to those who believe in the same principals as you do. Does that discourage you, in any way, that not everyone will understand what you are doing? They may even look at you link you're a little crazy.
The Mr. and I have always talked about living a life where we are on acres and acres of our own land. Where we have a garden, and most of our food comes from what we can grow. The satisfaction of growing your own food is one that I know, but the Mr. does not. Still, it entices him to consume the fruit of his labor, literally.  We are clearing the clutter from our home now so that we can spend $30k on a modern, container home and not live in debt the rest of our lives so that we may enjoy each other's company for as long as we have each other. We dream of days where we wake up when we want to, and have the whole day to do whatever we please. We are not chained to a desk doing mindless drone work for a paycheck. And that paycheck doesn't pay for what we want... open skies, fresh air, days filled with the only worries on our minds are what are we cooking for dinner and what book to read.  Does that qualify as a quiet life? In our opinion, it does. We want to focus on actually enjoying our days, how ever many the good Lord decides to give us. That is why I'm striving for a quiet life.

  1. When I was younger, my energy came from being around others and being in the middle of the crowd. Over the years I have found I need more quiet time to reflect and recharge. I love my home and there is nothing better than sitting in my favorite spot and just being. When I was in college, I would have never expected this is what I would need.
