DIY Fruit & Veggie Wash

Fruits and veggies. Lets face it folks, you really don't know where that piece of produce has been. After seeing countless alerts on the news and web about this product being recalled because of salmonella outbreak, or this outbreak and that outbreak making people in 14 states sick and on & on. I just was fed up really! I mean we pay for products and we trust that they have been tested and deemed OK and safe! Especially food that we will put in our bodies! It's an outrage to me! So, since we live in an apartment and can't plant our own veggies, the next best thing to insuring it is safe to consume is washing that produce like there's no tomorrow. OK, now to my next thought- what on earth do I wash it with that will get rid of the bad things, but not kill me in the process? Can't use bleach, can't use any sort of chemicals... I was at a loss and immediately googled like crazy.  I came up with lots of products that were ready to use, but then again, what is in THOSE products? So when I came across a DIY wash on Pinterest (which is quickly becoming my new google), I had to try it. And I must say, what came off in the water was disgusting! I will never again think a quick squirt with the water faucet before biting into any product is acceptable!

Take a look at my process-

I used 1 cup of vinegar and 3 tbsp. of baking soda in luke warm water. Soaking everything for a few minutes, then used a brush to scrub the junk off.  Above is everything I washed, and below is the proof of how dirty things are!

Everything was washed. Even though like cucumbers, I peel them and eat the inside, I still felt like dragging the knife through the dirt would contaminate the inside and so I just decided to be safe than sorry and washed it all!

Do you guys wash your veggie and use the same wash recipe?

  1. Yes I was all my fruits and veggies even though they are organic. I wash in 2 cups of vinegar to a sink full of water with 4 tbsp of baking soda 1/2 cup lemon juice. I also make a spray bottle for those times when I am too lazy to soak my veggies and fruits. The recipe is 1 cup water 1 cup vinegar 1/4 lemon juice and 1tbsp baking soda. Fruits and vegetables are dirtier than we realize. They grow on the ground and are handled by countless people before they get to us. Even the ones that are organic are exposé to rodent poop lol. So I am always washing and soaking produce these days. Seems like it never ends.

  2. Wow! I feel like a failure here! I barely wash my veggies compared to what you are doing here!! I'm going to have to do this! I guess my excuse is that we are living in such small quarters (studio condo) and I'm used to a huge kitchen, so I'm finding that I'm lazy. Also, how do you cook your summer squash (yellow squash)? I ask this because the ones that are small are actually better, in taste. My grandmother taught me that and I find it to be true.. I just thought I would throw that in. I'm a big veggie cooker and squash happens to be one of my faves! In fact, I just made a roasted butternut squash parm pasta and it's my new favorite pasta, like EVER!! :)
